Driving in Tasmania
What You Need to Know

Country Roads

Tasmanian roads are beautiful but can be a little different from what you’re used to. Most are winding country roads, following mountains, rivers, and shorelines.

Weather can change quickly—one minute bright sunshine, the next torrential rain, ice, or even snow. Drive carefully, take regular breaks, and always follow speed limits (which change frequently on country roads).

Wildlife on the Roads

Tasmanian wildlife is active at night, and many animals, including Tasmanian devils, are difficult to spot against dark roads. If possible, plan your drive during daylight hours.

  • Scan the roadside for wildlife, particularly in known ‘hot spots’ where warning signs are posted.

  • Drive slower at night to give yourself (and the animals) a better chance of avoiding a collision.

  • Never throw food scraps from your car—this attracts wildlife to roadsides.

  • If you hit an animal and it’s safe to stop, contact Bonorong Wildlife Rescue on 0447 264 625 for assistance.

Remote Roads

If you’re used to city driving, you’ll need to adjust.

  • Your drive to Blue Seas Holiday Villas takes you through true Tasmanian country towns—these aren’t tourist hotspots made to look quaint, but real working communities with local pubs, corner stores, and plenty of character. We recommend stopping in at least one of these towns to experience them for yourself.

  • There can be long stretches of road (sometimes almost an hour) between towns, so plan ahead for fuel stops, meals, and toilet breaks.

  • Pack some snacks and water, just in case.
